What IS Chaperon?
Chaperon is like a glove box -- not the enclosure in your car's dashboard, but
rather the sealed container that laboratory staff might use to handle radioactive
materials or a sensitive scientific experiment. (Like Homer Simpson uses.)
Authorized developers can reach into the container and perform a defined set of operations on the code. Chaperon, unlike the glove box, is invisible to the developers. Security protections automatically engage when the programmer logs in to the system. Just as they would if Chaperon weren't present, developers check out the portion of code assigned them, test it, correct errors and check the code back in. The code stays in the sealed box.
Chaperon blocks any attempt to cut and paste from it, save it to an unauthorized
memory device or e-mail it. "Trip wires" trigger alerts if a developer attempts
unauthorized actions. Supervisors can intervene before damage occurs. In addition,
Chaperon protects the code during shipment to and from the developer. Chaperon
also records information about who has touched the source code. This digital
paper trail provides documentation for litigation or regulatory needs.
Bottom line is -- You should be able to sleep better
at night knowing that you have trusted this vendor to protect your IP.
Unless you see the
, you're not protected by Chaperon.
